One of the most important steps in the journey of ensuring homes are built to stand the test of time is the pile foundation – and having placed thousands of homes onto new foundations over our 30+ years of operation, we have become experts in pile construction.

PILE FOUNDATIONS
THE BASICS

Pile foundations are extremely popular across NZ. This is due to a few factors, from our varied landscape and weather to the fairly common seismic activity and common soil composition. They work by driving piles deep into the ground, transferring the load of the building onto competent soil as opposed to weak or poorly compacted surface soil. Pile foundations – most notably suspended floor foundations, also elevate the home to provide additional space for renovations and to protect homes that are in areas susceptible to flooding.

Getting Started - Organising a Site Inspection

Fenton House Removals has made the process for getting your pile’s foundation project started simple and straightforward. The first step is to organise a site inspection and get necessary reports and consents including a geotechnical report to establish the site, soil, terrain and required foundation plan.

Our experts will then be able to recommend the best type of pile foundation for your property based on the reports and provide a detailed quote for the installation.

SITE
PREPARATION

Before installing pile foundations, You will need to prepare the site. This may include removing any existing structures, trees or other obstacles. Once this has been done, earthworks can be performed to ensure that the site is level.

During this time, it is also important to ensure that all your permits and consents are in order – a process that your assigned project manager can assist with.

TYPE OF
PILE FOUNDATIONS

There are several types of pile foundations, each suited to different soil conditions and building requirements. Two of the most common types of timber pile foundations in NZ are end-bearing and friction piles.

End-Bearing Piles: Used when there is a solid layer of soil or rock under the surface soil for the pile footing to transfer the load onto.
Friction Piles: typically used in areas where the soil is soft and there is not a good chance of finding a solid layer to support the weight of the building – therefore these foundations use friction to ensure stability.

PILE FOUNDATION
APPLICATIONS

Pile foundations can be used in a variety of applications, including new builds, home extensions, and renovations. One of the most popular applications for pile foundations is a suspended floor foundation, which is ideal for homes and buildings that require additional living space, such as a basement or garage. They also provide the home with clearance from the ground for areas that may be prone to flooding.
